What is Lorem Ipsum?

Placeholder text used in place of real copy while a layout is being designed. The classic passage is scrambled Latin taken from Cicero's "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (45 BC) — real words, rearranged into nonsense. Typesetters have used it since the 1500s, and it survives because it does one job well: it gives a page realistic-looking text without anyone being tempted to read it.

Why not just type "test test test"?

Repeated words produce an unnaturally even texture, and English you can actually read pulls attention to the words instead of the layout. Lorem Ipsum has roughly the word-length and sentence-length distribution of real prose, so line breaks, ragged edges, and paragraph colour all land where they would with genuine copy.

What are the other flavours for?

They solve the one real weakness of Latin: nobody outside the design team knows what it means, so a client seeing a draft may think the page is broken or unfinished. Filler made of English words reads as obviously provisional while still behaving like prose. Bacon, Hipster and Pirate are jokes with a serious side-effect — they make it unmistakable that the text is placeholder — and Corporate doubles as plausible business copy for a mockup that needs to look like a real product page.

Is it safe to ship a page with filler text on it?

No, and the fun flavours make that failure louder rather than quieter, which is the point. Latin placeholder text has shipped to production unnoticed on plenty of sites because it looks vaguely official; "shiver me timbers" does not. If there is any chance the draft gets seen by a client or pushed live by accident, a flavour nobody could mistake for real copy is the safer choice.

Should I generate by paragraphs, sentences, or words?

Paragraphs for judging a layout — page rhythm, column height, and how a block of body copy sits against its surroundings. Sentences for a heading, a card excerpt, or a meta description where the length matters more than the shape. Words when you need to fill a fixed-length field and the exact count is the thing being tested.

Does this send anything to a server?

No. The word banks ship with the page and the text is assembled in your browser. There is no API call, no rate limit, and it keeps working offline once the page has loaded.

How do I get HTML instead of plain text?

Which word bank the text is built from. Classic Latin is the traditional Cicero corpus; Bacon, Hipster, Corporate and Pirate swap in English vocabulary so the text is obviously placeholder at a glance.

Generate / unit

How much text to produce, and in what unit. Paragraph and sentence lengths vary within a natural range rather than being fixed, so the output has the uneven texture real prose has.

Start with the signature opening

Begins the output with the flavour's traditional first sentence — "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" for Classic, and the matching in-joke for the others. Turn it off for text that reads as an excerpt from the middle of a document.

Wrap paragraphs in <p> tags

Emits each paragraph as its own <p> element instead of separating them with blank lines. Sentence and word output is a single run, so it comes back as one <p>.
