About this tool
- What size should my source image be?
- Square, at least 512×512 pixels — 1024×1024 or larger is ideal. The largest file this tool produces is a 512×512 PNG, so anything smaller than that has to be upscaled and will look soft. PNG with a transparent background gives the cleanest result, but any image format works.
- What if my image isn't square?
- It gets center-cropped to a square before resizing — the sides get trimmed evenly, top and bottom or left and right. If you need control over what gets cropped, use this site's Image Crop tool first.
- What files do I get?
- Depends which platforms you leave checked. Web gives you favicon.ico (16×16, 32×32, and 48×48 bundled into one file, so the browser can pick whichever is sharpest) plus standalone favicon-16x16.png and favicon-32x32.png files. iOS gives you apple-touch-icon.png (180×180, used when a user adds the site to their home screen). Android gives you android-chrome-192x192.png, android-chrome-512x512.png, and a site.webmanifest tying them together for Android and installable web apps.
- Where do these files go?
- Drop all of them in your site's root directory (next to index.html), then paste the generated HTML snippet into your page's <head>.
- Does this upload my image anywhere?
- No. Every icon is generated entirely in your browser using the Canvas API — nothing is uploaded to a server.
Configuration options
- Platforms
- Uncheck a platform to leave its files out of the results and the .zip — handy if, say, you already have Android icons sorted and only need the browser favicon. At least one must stay checked. Unchecking Android also hides the App name and color fields, since those only feed its manifest.
- App name
- Written into site.webmanifest as the "name" field, and truncated to 12 characters for "short_name". This is the label shown under the icon when a user adds your site to their Android home screen.
- Theme / Background color
- Theme color tints the browser's address bar on supporting mobile browsers and is written into the manifest and HTML snippet. Background color is used as the splash-screen backdrop while an installed web app is loading. Neither is painted onto the icons themselves.
